The insulation industry like all industries face challenges that force it to change. One of the biggest influencers of change over the recent years is corrosion under insulation (CUI). Mineral wool insulation being one of the earliest insulation material types has seen its fair share of challenges. The latest innovation for mineral wool has been in the way of adding corrosion inhibitors to counteract corrosion seen on pipelines where a majority of CUI occurs[1-source exxon study]. Along with the changing landscape of CUI, the CUI testing over the years has also changed. This paper looks into CUI testing developed in the 2000’s vs CUI testing developed in the 2020’s, comparing the differences between ASTM G189[2-astm ref] and TM 21549[3-ampp reference]. Testing of mineral wool insulation and other types of insulation to these two standards will be reviewed and discussed.
