Despite operating a distillation tower top temperature adequately above the water dew point and salt formation temperatures, many refiners struggle with corrosion in the distillation tower top section and/or top pumparound circuit due to a wet reflux condition. This paper will discuss what wet reflux is, methods of detection, typical causes, its potential consequences and options for mitigating.
