This paper and discussion will present the various systems used for protection of concrete surfaces, in primary and secondary containment structures, and concrete exposed to constant immersion. Additional discussion will detail the general steps required for repairing and preparing concrete substrates for application of a protective lining system and the road map, provided in SSPC SP 13 / NACE 6, “Surface Preparation of Concrete”, to attain long term barrier protection performance. The objective of this paper is for readers to better understand the complexities and processes of how to protect concrete primary and secondary containment structuresand concrete exposed to constant immersion. Readers will have knowledge of the typical protective barrier systems and the resources available from industry standards that will assure a satisfactory project outcome.
