Traditional Fireproofing Coating solutions for industrial applications consist of organic based, intumescent coatings. However, these systems have drawbacks, such as limited temperature and UV resistance, coating thicknesses with narrow tolerances, moisture sensitivity, mechanical stress fragility, and sensitivity to impact damage. These challenges may lead to lower fireproofing performance and/or durability. These organic binders are limited to maximum temperatures <300˚C before binder degradation begins. Momentive Performance Materials has developed a polysiloxane binder solution which can enable liquid fireproof coatings formulators to achieve operation temperatures > 400 ˚C while delaying fire propagation, reducing carbonation, and minimizing smoke/odor when exposed to flames. These formulations can also improve water, chemical, and UV resistance versus the typical organic-based coatings. This paper will introduce polysiloxane binder solutions, formulation guidelines and test results using a model formulation to highlight key advantages over organic-binder based fireproof coatings.
