Coatings manufacturers create coatings with a range of attributes. Whether it's beautification, protection against microbes, corrosion resistance or UV stability, performance testing is at the core of the development process. The industry has managed through VOC and HAPS regulations for decades. A new set of acronyms is becoming part of a formulator's vernacular. EPD, HPD, LCA and terms like circularity and embodied carbon are part of a new code. Formulating products for performance and sustainability is the new norm. Markets are demanding this focus. The question remains, what is the best approach? This paper will explore a model for incorporating sustainability into the product development process. A discussion of where and how to incorporate environmental considerations into the Stage-Gate process will be shared. A thoughtful review of how to win the struggle of material cost versus material impact will be outlined. And finally ideas on how consciously developing sustainable products brings unrealized value to various markets will be presented.
