In carbon dioxide capture and storage, the CO2 which contains impurities and is emitted from various sources, is captured and injected underground in a dense or supercritical phase through a pipe. To evaluate the corrosion resistance of CRA materials in supercritical CO2 with O2, SO2, NO2 and H2S and practical mixtures of gases, was evaluated using corrosion tests. These tests were performed under the assumption of flow back of the formation water. Based on our investigation of 13Cr, Super 13Cr, duplex stainless steels, super duplex stainless steels and Nibased alloys, we will compile all test data in the form of a material selection chart showing the effect of different chloride levels. Furthermore, we will consider not only chloride concentrations but also factors affecting the solubility of impurities and their mutual reactivity as corrosion factors. These findings will inform the development of a worst-case scenario for material selection in CCS downhole applications. Overall, Super Duplex Stainless Steel (UNS S39274) is a suitable material even in the event if high salinity formation water flowback. The applicable window of S39274 is also discussed.
