The subsequent investigation of the tragic collapse of the Champlain Condominium tower in Surfside, Florida in 2022 revealed an expansive data gap of the subsurface conditions of the highly developed barrier island coastal mainland. A $9.7M grant was awarded to establish a pilot subsurface monitoring system to characterize saltwater interfaces, water table positions, and corrosion potential in saturated and unsaturated zones. Adapting existing corrosion monitoring technology used for infrastructure to be deployed in the environmental subsurface proved a significant challenge. This and other design challenges of a novel, high spatial and temporal resolution, subsurface monitoring network are explored.
