One of the biggest challenges in any oil & gas processing facility is effective corrosion management. Crude processing facilities often struggle with implementation and maintaining an up-to-date corrosion management strategy (CMS) as a part of overall asset integrity program. Inadequate corrosion monitoring and mitigation can lead to loss of primary containments, process safety incidents and significant increase in maintenance, repair & replacement costs whereas unnecessary monitoring and mitigations actions will have substantial financial impact; the key is to maintain a balance. One crude processing facility experienced significant internal corrosion related challenges owing to unavailability of a documented corrosion management strategy (CMS). This paper outlines the major constituents of any effective CMS and provides step by step guidelines on how to develop one, through a case study of a crude processing facility.
