The increasing utilization of waste oils to produce biodiesel creates complexity for specifiers and storage tank operators. Waste oils are typically variable in their composition, and tend to contain a greater proportion of the fractions known to be damaging to coatings such as water and free fatty acids. This study seeks to understand the fundamental factors influencing the aggressivity of biofuel feedstocks and relate this to coating performance, providing insights to allow coatings to be specified effectively. The relationships between time, temperature, water content and free fatty acid content and coating performance are explored and explanations for the limitations of specific coating chemistries are deduced.
