OCTG 13Cr tempered martensitic stainless steel is used in an asset at the bottom of the completion in H2S containing environment beyond the concentration threshold as per ANSI/NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156. Field experience has shown that the material is resistant to Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC) above 60°C at a H2S partial pressure of 600 mbar. While the tubing string above the production packer is made of low alloy steel with an associated mitigation, investigations were performed to evaluate the SSC resistance of 13Cr on the full completion string where lower temperatures are experienced in the upper section. A dedicated test matrix was developed to assess the material performance across a temperature range from 24°C to 60 °C. SSC, SCC and crevice corrosion tests were carried out under two environmental scenarios, with moderate chloride and high chloride concentrations. Additionally, thermodynamic simulations were performed to predict the behavior of 13Cr under the tested conditions, showing good correlation with the experimental results.
