While chloride-induced steel corrosion is well-known, the chemical and physical interactions with the cement binder are critical, but less well understood. In this presentation I will try to give the specific details of the physical chemistry related to why concrete/cement corrode from salt exposture, and at the end, give some means of mitigating this corrosion based on this "first principle" type of discussion.
