5.2 Panelist Biographies
Dr. Alex Thornton CChem MRSC
With 38 years of experience, Dr. Thornton has advanced scale technology application and new molecule development. He has authored and presented on innovative and novel scale-related technical papers at oilfield conferences worldwide. Since 2019 as Global Innovation Scale Technology manager, he has made significant inroads with respect to better understanding of control and management managing of oilfield sulphide scales. while not forgetting his fundamental scale roots in on-site and in-field support, with a significant reputation for scale-related forensic analysis across the UK, Scandinavian North Sea, Middle East, South America, Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe.
Dr. Sankara Papvinasam, F-NACE, F-ASTM
Dr. Sankara Papavinasam is a distinguished corrosion control scientist and consultant based in Calgary, Alberta Canada. He founded CorrMagnet Consulting Inc. in 2013. He earned his Ph.D. researching the corrosion and mitigation of lead, copper, and carbon steel and has since built an exceptional career spanning over three decades in corrosion science and engineering.
Dr. Papavinasam has made outstanding contributions to multiple areas of internal corrosion control, including corrosion prediction, product development, electrochemistry, sour corrosion, and test method development. His prolific scientific output includes one book, two book editings, three software products, five book chapters, two patents, and over 100 published papers.
He has served in a leadership role for the Government of Canada in the area of oil and gas pipeline corrosion control, working with Canadian producers to improve production integrity and mitigate corrosion-induced pipeline and production failures. Through consulting practice, he provides technical guidance, corporate consulting, and education and training to professionals in the field.
Dr. Papavinasam has demonstrated exceptional leadership within NACE, including serving as chairman of STG 31, where he significantly improved efficiency and sponsored numerous symposia attracting hundreds of papers and attendees. His professional achievements have been recognized through his fellowship in both NACE and ASTM.
Dr. Bob Fu
Dr. Bob Fu is a Senior Production Chemistry Engineer at bp with 36 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, specializing in Flow Assurance and Integrity Management. His career spans oil and gas production both inland and offshore across Europe, Africa, Asia, and now the Gulf of Mexico. Dr. Fu has been an active member of AMPP/NACE for 35 years, serving in multiple leadership roles within technical committees and the Houston Section, where he received the Distinguished Service Award in 2014. He is also a certified Cathodic Protection (CP) and Coating Inspector Program (CIP) specialist.
George Winning
A highly experienced Corrosion Subject Matter Expert with over 38 years in the oil and gas industry, George currently serves as Engagement Lead in the ALO team at Wood. His expertise includes low-carbon sector work, investigating acid effects on dense-phase CO₂ corrosivity, and leading working groups on impurities in CO₂ transport systems. He has published extensively on corrosion, corrosion inhibition, and CCUS, and holds prominent roles in AMPP, the Institute of Corrosion, and the European Federation of Corrosion. He is a AMPP Fellow.
