College of Engineering
Here’s the bio for the last-minute addition to the RIP. I think that’s the last item needed to add that to the platform. Thanks! Mirna Urquidi‑Macdonald, Ph.D., is an accomplished scientist, educator, and author whose career spans plasma physics, materials science, corrosion engineering, and science communication. She earned her B.Sc. in mathematics and physics from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey before completing her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in plasma physics at the University of Orsay Paris XI, followed by postdoctoral work in physico‑chemical spectrography at the Pierre Marie Curie Laboratory in Paris. Her professional journey includes influential roles across academia, government, and industry—from serving as a tenured associate professor at UNAM and managing major engineering projects for Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad and the Institute of Electrical Research, to conducting corrosion research at Ohio State University and leading advanced modeling initiatives as a senior research scientist at SRI International. From 1991 to 2012, she shaped generations of engineers as a professor in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Penn State University. With over 250 scientific publications in conventional and AI‑driven modeling for materials and biomedical applications, she continues to inspire young learners as the CEO and creator of Tom‑the‑Atom, a science book series designed to spark curiosity in chemistry and environmental science.
